Introduction

Accidents are a major cause of concern in India, as they result in loss of life, injury, and damage to property. There are several factors that contribute to the high rate of accidents in the country, including poor road conditions, inadequate traffic management, and irresponsible driving behaviors.

Here is a list of the top 20 accident-prone areas in India:


1.Delhi

The capital city of India has the highest number of road accidents in the country, with more than 20,000 accidents reported in 2019 alone. The city has a high population density, narrow roads, and a lack of proper traffic management, which contribute to the high number of accidents. Although the population of this place is really high, the space is really very limited, and because Delhi has advanced infrastructure and is the capital city of India, the risk of accidents in this place also increases. The main reason for the accidents occurring in these areas are overcrowding of vehicles and very less space for moving around. 


2.Mumbai:

 The financial capital of India is known for its busy roads and high population density, which contribute to the high number of accidents in the city. Mumbai is the hub of meeting for people from all over the world. Even if the infrastructure is really advanced in Mumbai, it is also very risky in some areas. Mumbai keeps developing day after day, the population also increases with time and space in the city becomes limited which increases the daily number of accidents. A lot of construction work is also constantly going on in the city and lack of safety maintenance leads to hazards. 


3.Kolkata

 The capital city of West Bengal has a high number of accidents due to narrow roads, heavy traffic, and inadequate traffic management. Although the accident rate has decreased since 2010, the city still has an alarming rate of accidents happening on a daily basis. The road management system has improved a lot in the past years but still is flawed. The number of pedestrian deaths in Kolkata is really high. The reason is simple: excessive traffic and lack of following proper traffic rules has led to a large number of pedestrian accidents. 


4.Bangalore

The technological hub of Karnataka has a high number of accidents due to the rapid expansion of the city, which has resulted in narrow roads and heavy traffic. People are constantly immigrating in the state because of the higher job opportunities and higher learning opportunities in a lot of different streams. In a lot of cases the road accidents are caused in the area due to unlicensed drivers and drunkards. These cases have kept on increasing even more after the pandemic as during the time no one was able to properly keep tab of the number of accidents happening and their causes respectively. Most of the major accidents occur during the rush hour of the day from 9am to 12noon.


5.Hyderabad

In this city the accidents are mostly caused by rash driving, overspeeding of mainly two wheelers. The number of accidents recorded in the city every year are really concerning. The city recorded 2,367 accidents in the year  2017 and the highest number was 2,540 in 2018. In 2019, the number had certainly declined but the decline was not at all impressive with the total number of accidents being 2493. Due to overspeeding and reckless driving a lot of drivers and victims are involved in serious accidents and even deaths. 

6.Chennai

The number of accidents in Chennai raises serious concern about the safety of the individuals, especially people who are traveling across the city on a daily basis for work and education purposes. After Delhi, this city has the highest number of deaths in road accidents. It is one of the most accident prone areas in India. Careless driving is a major cause due to which these accidents are occurring and most of the victims are middle aged men. Most of the accidents involved two wheeler vehicles. People are not travelling using public transport which is constantly increasing the traffic jams and in turn leading to unmanageable roadways. 


7.Pune

Pune is also a very popular and crowded city in Maharashtra. A lot of people migrate to the city because of its improved infrastructure, medical facilities and also good educational and job opportunities which has made the place really crowded. This has led to a lot of congestion in the city due to the increasing population. Pune-Solapur and Pune-Ahmednagar highways, which is one of the most dangerous roads in India, have recorded the most number of accidents in the city. In most of the accidents, the victims are motorists who get injured due to rash driving. A lot of people have died in these types of road rage accidents. 


8.Ahmedabad

The capital city of Gujarat has a high number of accidents due to narrow roads, heavy traffic, and inadequate traffic management. It has a lot of India's deadliest roads. Most of the accidents happen on the flyovers in the city. Better road management system should be incorporated in the city for a safer experience for the citizens. 


9.Surat

The city has given better results compared to the past years in recent years but even then the number has not decreased drastically. The number of deaths in accidents has decreased but the number of seriously injured has increased a lot. The police in the area are putting in effort constantly to make the area an accident free zone by developing better roads and stricter rules. 


10.Jaipur

The capital of Rajasthan has witnessed a huge rise in the number of accidents due to increased urbanisation in the city. It has a lot of dangerous roads in India which account for a large number of deaths due to accidents. Overspeeding and bad road features in the city cause a lot of accidents here. 


11.Patna

Patna has a bad reputation when it comes to traffic management. It is one of the most accident prone areas in India. Patna has accounted for a large number of accidents in the last few years. Drinking and driving is one of the main reasons why people are getting involved in accidents in the area. Proper steps need to be implemented so that these types of accidents can be prevented in the future. Another cause is rash driving which causes most of the bike accidents in India. 


12.Ludhiana

Ludhiana is a famous tourist destination in Punjab and also a place with high population and narrow roads. 813 accidents were recorded in the year 2021 which is a very high number. These accidents caused the death of 649 people. Rash driving in small lanes causes these accidents. 


13.Agra

Agra is a very beautiful but crowded area. It attracts a large crowd all year round because of the beautiful Taj Mahal and other famous tourist destination spots. A lot of accident prone cars are hired by tourists to reduce the cost of the journey which increases the risk of accidents in the area. Not following traffic rules and rash driving is a major concern in the city. A lot of deaths are also occurring in the city in road accidents.  


14.Lucknow

The capital city of Uttar Pradesh has recorded a very high rate of accidents in the past few years and is an accident prone area in India. Not only two wheelers, big vehicles like trucks and buses are also involved in accidents in this city. The narrow roads and lack of proper traffic management is a major reason for the increasing number of accidents in the city. 


15.Thane

The city is known for its good railway connectivity with the rest of the state. As a result this area has a lot of people residing in it and a lot of narrow lanes are created which increases the risk of accidents in turn. Although the number of accidents has decreased in the past year, the figure is still a concerning one and poses a threat to the safety of the people who are traveling on a daily basis on the streets of Thane. The top accident prone cars in India are Hyundai cars. 


16.Kanpur

Every other day a lot of road accidents occur in Kanpur owing to the poor road quality in the area. Kanpur receives a lot of pilgrims and religious tourists for its beauty and a lot of them get involved in accidents. The quality of the roads should be made better for the safety and well being of the citizens. 


17.Vadodara

The most number of accidents in this area are caused by SUVs which are one of the most dangerous vehicles in India. A lot of times the reason for these accidents are lack of proper infrastructure and rash driving on these bad roads. 


18.Indore

Indore has a very high rate of road accidents happening mainly due to rash driving and mostly involving motorists. According to the data, 4489 road accidents were recorded in the year 2018 that caused 885 deaths. Even during the lockdown period road accidents were happening in Indore. 


19. Bhopal 

Bhopal accounted for 2186 road accidents in which 145 people lost their lives and 1758 people were injured in the accidents. The roads in the area have very bad features and are easily damaged. The area has limited metalled roads. Misrod in Bhopal is one of most dangerous roads in India and most of the accidents have happened here. 


20.Visakhapatnam

It is also listed among the top accident prone areas in India. The road accident rates are the top reason for deaths in the city. But according to the traffic police of the city, this problem can be solved by educating people about following proper safety norms and traffic rules.
